The Edible Campus Project

The Edible Campus project is an ongoing discovery of food sources at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus (UWI-STA). This discovery is endowed with meaning, originating from the history of our Campus and the context of colonial agriculture and food production in the Caribbean region. Through exploration of the foodscape on Campus, this project aims to engage our campus community, and wider society, on a discovery-tour of self, culture, and taste.

The fieldwork for this project, has been a product of Geographies of Food (GEOG 2014), an elective course in the Department that examines food systems, food cultures, and sustainable agricultural practices. Student-authors and research assistants have worked diligently toward this publication in order to influence the reader’s perspectives of, and relationships to, food.

The Edible Campus is a document based on praxis that allows students to implement data collection and analysis techniques, and prepare their work for consumption by a wider audience. Acknowledging the impact of a public text, the students’ efforts, along with their Lecturers’, have been herculean. The Geographies of Food course thanks the Campus Research and Publication Fund for its support.
